Session Overview
Developing countries don't necessarily have access to internet connectivity, to computer hardware or reliable mains electricity that is often taken for granted here in the UK. Nevertheless, appropriate ICT has been developed in some countries out of necessity, sometimes by adapting existing technologies, for educational purposes.
At the 3rd International Conference on Information and Communication Technologies and Development (ICTD 2009), Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates described ICT as 'a catalyst of development'. He said 'information technology is a tool for achieving better results in sectors like the health, agricultural and financial services and education sectors. Among its main contributions are spreading awareness and increasing reach and the task at hand was to ensure technology delivers the greatest benefit to the world's poor' He also added that ' a more rigorous approach to the field of communications technology for development is essential'
This seminar will look at recent case study examples and research projects from different parts of the developing world. There will be an opportunity to discuss the problems faced by developing countries, with a focus on innovative and rigorous solutions that have already been found and implemented. Offering delegates the chance to meet with some of the UK's most experienced practitioners and discuss this important and ever-growing area of research.
